Block an app

How to block Instagram on iPhone

To block Instagram on iPhone, open Settings › Screen Time › App Limits, add a limit for Instagram, and set a Screen Time passcode. Add instagram.com under Websites so Safari is covered too, or use an app blocker like blokr for a schedule or a Deep focus block you cannot edit while it runs.

  1. Open Settings › Screen Time › App Limits › Add Limit and tick Instagram under Social.
  2. Set the daily time, keep Block at End of Limit on, and tap Add.
  3. Expand Websites in the same list and add instagram.com so Safari is covered.
  4. Tap Lock Screen Time Settings and set a passcode, ideally one someone else chooses.
  5. For a block without an Ignore Limit button, create a Schedule or a Deep focus block in blokr.

Deleting Instagram is the first thing most people try. It is back within a week, because the App Store is one tap away and nothing else changed. A real block closes three doors: the app, instagram.com in Safari, and the reinstall. Screen Time can close all three if you set it up properly. If your problem is that you keep tapping Ignore Limit, the last section covers a blocker that removes the button.

Option 1: Limit the Instagram app with Screen Time

App Limits give Instagram a daily time budget. Set it to one minute and it is effectively a block.

  1. Open Settings › Screen Time. Turn Screen Time on if it is off.
  2. Tap App Limits › Add Limit.
  3. Use the search field at the top, or expand Social, and tick Instagram. Leave the Social category itself unticked unless you want every social app limited.
  4. Tap Next and set the daily time. One minute is the smallest value and the closest App Limits gets to a full block.
  5. Keep Block at End of Limit switched on, then tap Add.
  6. Go back to the Screen Time screen and tap Lock Screen Time Settings to set a four-digit passcode.

With Block at End of Limit on, reaching the limit shows a Time Limit screen that asks for the passcode before it gives you more time. With it off, the same screen offers Ignore Limit, and one tap puts you back in the feed. The passcode is the whole mechanism. If you know it, you will use it. Ask a partner or a friend to type it, or write it down somewhere inconvenient.

Limits reset at midnight. If Share Across Devices is on in Screen Time, the same limit applies on your iPad.

Option 2: Block instagram.com in Safari

An App Limit only covers the app. Instagram’s website has the feed, Reels, Stories and messages, and Safari opens it without any of the above getting in the way. Add the website to the same limit or create a separate one.

  1. Open Settings › Screen Time › App Limits › Add Limit.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the category list and expand Websites.
  3. Tap Add Website, type instagram.com and tap Next.
  4. Set the time and tap Add.

The limit applies in Safari. Other browsers on iPhone generally respect it too, but check the one you use. If you want instagram.com gone rather than limited, there is a harder switch: Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Content Restrictions › Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites, and add instagram.com under Never Allow. That page has no Ignore Limit button. Changing it back needs the Screen Time passcode.

Option 3: Instagram’s own time-management settings

Instagram ships its own tools. Open your profile, tap the menu and look for Time management (older versions list it under Your activity › Time spent). You can set a daily limit, schedule a sleep mode that mutes notifications, and turn on break reminders.

These are reminders, not blocks. When the daily limit arrives, Instagram shows a full-screen notice with a button to dismiss it, and the feed is right behind it. They are worth turning on as a signal. They are not worth relying on.

Close the reinstall loophole

If you delete Instagram instead of blocking it, the App Store brings it back in the exact moment you least want it to. Close that door too.

  1. Open Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
  2. Tap App Installations & Purchases (called iTunes & App Store Purchases on iOS 17).
  3. Set Installing Apps to Don’t Allow.

The App Store icon disappears from the Home Screen until you change this back, which requires the Screen Time passcode. The same screen has Deleting Apps. Set that to Don’t Allow as well and you cannot delete a blocker app to get around it.

Option 4: Block Instagram with an app blocker

Everything above works until the moment you decide it should not. Screen Time always leaves a way out for the person who holds the passcode, and that person is usually you. An app blocker like blokr runs on the same Screen Time framework, so Instagram is blocked just as hard, but you decide in advance how the block ends.

In blokr, pick Instagram in the app picker, add instagram.com on the Websites tab of the same picker, then choose one of three block types:

  • Schedule: Instagram is blocked during fixed hours, every day, Mon–Fri or on weekends. Work hours, the first hour of the morning, everything after 10 pm.
  • Limit: Instagram gets a daily budget, say 20 minutes. When it is used up, the app stays blocked until the time you set, for example midnight.
  • Focus session: a one-off block for the next hour or the rest of the afternoon.

Each block runs in Light or Deep mode. In Light mode you can end the block from inside the app, scan a QR code or an NFC tag you keep in another room, or earn the unblock by using a different app for a while first. In Deep mode the block is locked while it runs: there is no stop button, you cannot edit or delete the block, and you cannot delete the blocker itself. The only way out is one emergency unblock a week. That is the Instagram block that holds in a weak moment. Templates like Night shield and Study mode set the common cases up in one tap.

Three mistakes that let Instagram back in

Knowing your own passcode. Every Screen Time method falls apart here. Have someone else set it, and do not store it in Notes.

Blocking the app and forgetting Safari. instagram.com is the same feed. Add it under Websites the day you set the App Limit, not the day you catch yourself scrolling in Safari.

Treating Instagram’s reminder as a block. The daily limit inside Instagram is a pop-up with a dismiss button. Use it as a signal, and put the real block in Screen Time or a blocker.

Questions, answered

Can I block Instagram but keep Messenger and WhatsApp?

Yes. Screen Time App Limits and app blockers work per app. Tick Instagram only and leave the rest of the Social category unticked. Instagram's direct messages live inside the Instagram app, so they go with it.

Does blocking the Instagram app also block instagram.com?

No. An App Limit covers only the app. Add instagram.com under App Limits › Websites, or add the website to the same block in a blocker that supports websites.

Can I block Instagram without a Screen Time passcode?

You can set a limit without one, but the Time Limit screen then offers Ignore Limit and one tap reopens the app. Set a passcode, or use a blocker with Deep focus, which locks the block while it runs.

What happens when I reach the Instagram limit?

The icon dims and shows an hourglass. Opening it shows a Time Limit screen. Without a passcode you can take one more minute, snooze for 15 minutes or ignore the limit for the day. With Block at End of Limit on, extra time needs the passcode.

Will Instagram come back if I delete it?

Only if you reinstall it. To make that harder, set Installing Apps to Don't Allow under Content & Privacy Restrictions. The App Store icon disappears until you change it back with the passcode.

Can I block Instagram on iPad too?

Yes. Turn on Share Across Devices in Screen Time and the same limit applies on every device signed in with your Apple Account. App blockers built on Screen Time work on iPad as well.
